IIO Defends RCMP In Shooting At Ferry Terminal

A man believed to have been involved in a shooting in Vernon and later killed in a confrontation with RCMP at the Departure Bay ferry terminal in Nanaimo is now said to have shot himself in the head.

That’s revealed in a report by the Independent Investigations Office.

The ferry terminal incident occurred May 8th, the day after a man was shot while in a car in the parking lot of the Dollar Tree store in the 2700 block of 43rd Avenue

He survived but has never been identified by police.

The IIO says the man involved in the Nanaimo shooting was driving a car stolen during violent theft in Penticton.

It’s report says he was armed with a long-barrelled pistol with a silencer welded to it.

The report says police opened fire when the man raised the gun and he was hit five times as he shot himself.

The IIO says its review of the facts demonstrate the man was in a desperate state and his actions presented a life threatening situation to the police present.

It says their actions were justified and there is no evidence they committed any offence that would be referred to crown counsel.

Neither police nor the IIO have confirmed the man’s possible connection to the shooting in Vernon, nor have they identified him.
