Rockets Win Memorial Cup Bid

Kelowna has been chosen to host the 2020 Memorial Cup.

The Kelowna Rockets and the society created to pursue the major junior hockey championship were selected today by the CHL, beating out bids from Kamloops and Lethbridge.

“The CHL based its decision on a number of factors, including financial support, strength of the team, tournament facility and venues, community capacity, tournament development opportunities and community involvement,” says a City news release.

Kelowna won the championship on home ice in 2004 when it last hosted the 10-day tournament.

The 2020 tournament will be held May 22-31.

“What a great win for Kelowna. We congratulate the Kelowna Rockets on their winning proposal to the league and we look forward to supporting them to develop an exciting community event,” said Mayor Colin Basran. “This is a great opportunity to once again showcase Kelowna’s excellence as a host for high-profile events.”

City staff will submit a funding request to support the event to City Council during budget deliberations later this year.

The society is also eligible for funding support from B.C.’s Ministry of Tourism, Arts and Culture.
