New LED lighting system improves visibility at Kelowna airport

Kelowna International Airport has switched on a new LED airfield lighting system aimed at improving visibility for pilots and safety for arriving aircraft.

The more than $9-million upgrade replaces aging infrastructure and includes new lighting for the runway, taxiways and approaches, as well as updated signage and control systems. The project was funded through airport revenues and reserves, with no direct tax impact on the public.

YLW CEO Sam Samaddar says the brighter, more precise lighting will be particularly beneficial during wildfire smoke events and other low-visibility conditions.

“The transition to LED airfield lighting delivers two important benefits for YLW: enhanced safety and improved energy efficiency,” Samaddar said in a statement.

The new system is also expected to reduce energy use while supporting the airport’s long-term infrastructure plans as passenger and aircraft activity continues to grow.

People living near the airport may notice five flashing lights at each end of the runway following the upgrade.

YLW says the lights are a normal part of the new system and are used to help pilots identify the runway. They do not indicate an emergency or other hazard.

The lighting project is part of YLW’s broader master plan to accommodate the growing transportation needs of the Okanagan Valley.
