Kelowna Mayor Tom Dyas has released his full re-election platform, outlining priorities on public safety, treatment, transportation, housing, jobs and municipal spending.

Dyas, who is seeking another term as mayor, released the platform Tuesday ahead of the Oct. 17 municipal election.

The plan calls for 75 additional frontline public-safety positions, including RCMP officers, firefighters and bylaw enforcement officers.

Dyas also wants a permanent 24-hour public-safety presence in downtown Kelowna and Rutland, along with continued funding for the city’s Business Security Rebate and other crime-prevention measures.

On treatment and recovery, the platform calls for expanded detox and treatment capacity, a regional treatment and recovery centre and what the campaign describes as mandatory compassionate care for people whose mental-health or addiction challenges create a danger to themselves or others.

Transportation proposals include starting construction on the Clement Crosstown Connector, improvements in the Mission, completing the Hollywood Road and Gateway connection, advancing Glenmore Road improvements and pushing the province to prioritize a second Okanagan crossing.

The platform also proposes making attainable homeownership a city housing objective and creating incentives for more family-sized homes.

On economic development, Dyas is proposing a YLW Economic Corridor around Kelowna International Airport, aimed at attracting aerospace, advanced manufacturing, logistics and other employment uses.

His campaign also proposes a program called Kelowna First Jobs & Careers, intended to create first-job and early-career opportunities.

Dyas says the city has made progress during his first term and that the next four years should focus on continuing that work.

Kelowna voters will elect one mayor and eight councillors on Oct. 17. Dyas is running against Ron Cannan and Andrew Mark Uitvlugt.
