Carney expected to announce decision on pipeline’s national interest designation
OTTAWA — Prime Minister Mark Carney is expected to announce Thursday that an oil pipeline to the West Coast will be designated as a project of national interest under the Building Canada Act.
Carney is scheduled to be in Fort McMurray, Alta., with Alberta Premier Danielle Smith to deliver the news.
It would be the first project to receive the designation since Ottawa passed Bill C-5 more than a year ago. The act gives Ottawa the power to issue special conditions for projects covering a dozen federal laws in order to help them proceed.
In November 2025, Ottawa and Alberta signed an energy pact which committed the federal government to declaring a pipeline from Alberta to the West Coast a project in the national interest.
