A historic four-peat for Belgian cyclist Remco Evenepoel in Montreal

MONTREAL — Cyclist Remco Evenepoel had the opportunity to make history in Montreal, and he didn’t miss his chance.

The 26-year-old Belgian set a record by winning the men’s elite individual time trial at the Road World Championships for the fourth consecutive year on Sunday.

Evenepoel, who had won the Grand Prix cycliste de Québec just over a week ago, completed the 39.2-kilometre technical Montreal course in 44:53.13, 57 seconds faster than Italy’s Filippo Ganna.

The young French prodigy, Paul Seixas, claimed the bronze medal by finishing 16 seconds behind Ganna. He remained in the lead until the very end, as Ganna and Evenepoel were the last two riders to start.

Canadians Michael Leonard and Nickolas Zukowsky finished 13th and 31st, respectively, among the 60 riders who started the race.

Some of these riders will compete again on Tuesday in the mixed relay, but the highlight of the World Championships — the road race — is set to take place next Sunday.
