5 children in the Philippines rescued as B.C. man faces child-sex charges, police say

NEW WESTMINSTER — Five children in the Philippines have been rescued and a man from New Westminster, B.C., faces multiple child-sex charges in Canada following an international police investigation.

Police in New Westminster say its major crime unit began an investigation in June of 2023 after getting a tip from the RCMP’s child exploitation unit.

The department says the investigation was launched after an upload of child sexual abuse material from an IP address that investigators traced to a home in New Westminster.

Police used a warrant to seize multiple electronic devices and found an indication of child sexual exploitation offences involving victims in the Philippines.

Gerard Saunders has been charged with possession of child sex abuse material, making the material and making an arrangement with a person to lure a child.

Police say the children were identified and rescued, while their mother faces child-sexual exploitation offences.

Saunders has been released with a court date and must comply with extensive conditions.
