West Kelowna house damaged by fire on Old Okanagan Highway

A house in West Kelowna was heavily damaged by fire Wednesday evening, prompting firefighters to take a defensive approach to prevent the blaze from spreading to nearby properties.

West Kelowna Fire Rescue responded to the 3500 block of Old Okanagan Highway at about 6 p.m., where crews encountered advanced fire conditions inside the structure.

The building was deemed unsafe for firefighters to enter, so an excavator was brought in to expose hidden fire and help crews complete the extinguishment.

West Kelowna Fire Rescue responded with four engines, a ladder truck, three safety officers and a command unit.

Investigators determined the area where the fire originated, but the specific cause remains undetermined because of damage sustained during overhaul operations.

West Kelowna Fire Rescue thanked Westbank First Nation bylaw and utilities crews, RCMP, BC Ambulance, Hydro and Approved Services for their assistance during the incident.
