Kelowna breaks ground on new Mission Activity Centre

Construction is underway on a new activity centre in Kelowna’s Mission neighbourhood, with the project set to add recreation, community and child-care space to the Mission Recreation Park campus.

The City of Kelowna held a groundbreaking ceremony for the facility, which will be built between the H2O Adventure + Fitness Centre and MNP Place. The centre will include a gymnasium, multi-purpose rooms, a community kitchen, gathering areas and licensed child-care spaces operated by the YMCA Southern Interior B.C.

More than $8 million in provincial and federal funding will support the creation of 91 new child-care spaces — 37 for children from birth to five years old and 54 for school-aged children.

The project also includes improvements outside the building, including a new plaza, shaded gathering areas and youth amenities. Plans call for a basketball court, parkour and skate facilities, as well as improved pedestrian connections through the park.
