Maltos Diaz’s 17-yard field goal earns Alouettes 30-27 OT win over Ticats
HAMILTON — Jose Maltos Diaz’s 17-yard field goal earned the Montreal Alouettes a 30-27 overtime win over the Hamilton Tiger-Cats on Thursday night to open the CFL regular season.
Diaz’s game-winning boot came after Hamilton’s Keric Wheatfall fumbled on the first possession. It was recovered by Robert Kennedy III, who had a pick-six in the contest, to end the threat.
Maltos Diaz’s 29-yard field goal on the final play of regulation forced overtime. He capped an amazing 56-yard, 13-play drive that saw Montreal convert all three third-down situations to keep it alive.
Montreal starter Davis Alexander extended his CFL record to begin a career to 12-0. Alexander finished 25-of-35 passing for 336 yards and a touchdown but the Alouettes did him no favours with 11 penalties for 113 yards.
