UPDATE: Residents still displaced due to morning apartment fire

Update

The residents of the apartment building that was the scene of a fire Wednesday morning have not been able to return home.

The City of Vernon, on behalf of Vernon Fire Rescue Services, said that out of an abundance of caution utilities to the building where the blaze sparked around 6 a.m. March 25 were turned off as firefighters assessed the damage to the building and units.

None of the residents were allowed to return to their homes, with the exception of those with less affected units who were able to enter and retrieve essential belongings.

All the residents of the Parkview Garden Apartments were being offered assistance through ESS Wednesday,

VFRS was assessing the units through the day and was expecting to allow some people back into their homes Thursday, though noted it would likely be done through a phased return approach.

The cause of the fire remained under investigation Wednesday afternoon.

Residents of an apartment building in South Vernon had to evacuate their homes due to a fire Wednesday morning.

Vernon Fire Rescue Services (VFRS) Chief David Lind said a fire broke out at in a unit at the Parkview Garden Apartments on 36th Street around 6 a.m. March 25.

The fire appeared to have started in one unit and then spread to several others.

VFRS responded and knocked down the main blaze, but crews remained on site extinguishing hot spots as of 8:30 a.m.

The cause of the fire remained under investigation as of time of publication.

Approximately 20 to 30 people were displaced due to the fire and they were being supported by Emergency Support Services.

There were no injuries reported initially.
