The debris from an early morning house fire remains piled up at a property just outside Vernon’s downtown core.

In the early morning hours of Friday, Feb. 13, a fire broke out at a residence at the intersection of 28th Street and 37th Avenue.

The fire destroyed the home, but Vernon Fire Rescue (VFRS) managed to keep the blaze contained to just the single structure.

The City of Vernon, speaking on behalf of VFRS, said in an email to Vernon Matters that “due to the extensive structural damage, the fire investigation was difficult to complete.”

As of time of publication, the city said the cause of the fire was considered “undetermined, unless further information is brought forward.”

Three people were living in the home at the time of the fire, and they reportedly managed to safely evacuate and were then assisted by Emergency Support Services.

The house was reduced to a pile of rubble by Friday afternoon, and the debris remained on site Tuesday, Feb. 17.

“Debris removal is the responsibility of the homeowner and their insurance provider,” the city stated.

“VFRS cannot provide details regarding the clean-up timeline or disposal process. If the debris is not removed within a reasonable timeframe, VFRS will follow up to help move the process forward.”
