CMHA Vernon encourages people seek support in the wake of Tumbler Ridge shooting

Feb 11, 2026 | 10:55 AM

The local branch of the agency that provides mental health supports for people said its understandable that the shooting in Tumbler Ridge that killed at least 10 people is being felt elsewhere.

The Vernon and District branch of the Canadian Mental Health Association (CMHA Vernon) said “violent incidents ripple far beyond the communities where they occur,” and that “it’s understandable if this news has stirred feelings of grief, fear, anger, confusion, or uncertainty, this is true for adults, youth and families alike.”

The mental health service provider said some people may be especially impacted, including those who have experienced violence or trauma; those who work in helping or emergency response roles; families with school-aged children; youth who may feel frightened, confused, or unsettled; and anyone feeling overwhelmed by this news.

CMHA Vernon said there are supports for people feeling distressed by this incident:

  • Interior Crisis Line Network: 1-888-353-2273
  • B.C. Mental Health Support Line: 310-6789 (no area code required)
  • 9-8-8 Suicide Crisis Line: call or text 988 anytime
  • Kids Help Phone: call or text 686868
  • Foundry B.C. App for iPhone or Android

“For young people specifically, reaching out to a trusted adult, such as a parent, teacher, counsellor, coach, or Elders, can make a meaningful difference,” CMHA Vernon stated.

“In difficult times like these, we encourage our communities to choose connection over fear, and compassion over isolation. By reaching out, listening deeply, and holding space for one another’s pain, we strengthen the bonds of care and resilience that hold our region together.”
