Addressing Challenges

RDNO reviewing its Agricultural Plan to adjust and strengthen the sector

Feb 4, 2026 | 3:11 PM

The Regional District of North Okanagan is reviewing its Regional Agricultural Plan and wants to hear from the public.

The plan is a key document that guides the long-term health and sustainability of local agriculture.

As the sector has faced a number of issues over the past several years, including the COVID-19 pandemic and the international trade challenges, the RDNO said the plan needs to be adjusted to build a more resilient, self-reliant, expanded local food system that reduces vulnerabilities, shortens supply chains, and increases the availability of locally sourced food.

The Regional District also said it needed to assess current conditions, emerging trends and regulatory changes, and update the plan to account for these changes and identify ways to support value-added agriculture and further integrate economic considerations into long-term planning.

“As global uncertainties continue to impact producers and consumers alike, this review presents a timely opportunity to modernize our approach to agricultural planning,” Shirley Fowler, Chair of the RDNO Board of Directors, stated.

“We want to ensure that our region is well-positioned to support local producers, strengthen food security, and continue to support a thriving agricultural economy.”

People who want to provide their input or ideas on how to shape the revised Regional Agricultural Plan can fill out an online survey by Feb. 17.
