Interior Health has declared respiratory infection outbreaks at two long term care facilities (LTCs) in Vernon.

The health authority said an Influenza A outbreak was identified at the Noric House facility Saturday, Jan. 3, and was affecting the entire facility.

IH said a Human Metapneumovirus outbreak was declared at the Hamlets in Vernon Monday, Jan. 5, and was also affecting the whole facility.

Human Metapneumovirus is a respiratory virus that can cause cold or flu-like symptoms, though can cause more severe illness to people with weakened immune systems, older adults, and young children.

IH said additional measures had been put in place to contain the illness to the affected facilities. Those include additional cleaning and disinfecting, increased use of personal protective equipment, and rescheduling outings and non-emergency appointments.
