B.C. holding its homeowner grants steady in 2026

The B.C. Government said it was maintaining its program to provide modest property tax relief for homeowners in 2026.

The province said it was holding its provincial homeowner grant program steady, which can see people in the majority of B.C., including the Okanagan, apply for a grant of up to $770. There are exceptions for people living in the Capital Regional District, Fraser Valley Regional District, and Metro Vancouver Regional District, where the maximum grants homeowners in those areas could access was set at $570.

The homeowner grants are based on a rate of $5 in support per $1,000 per assessed value, and people in the Okanagan and most of B.C. with residential properties valued at $2.229-million or more would not be eligible for any supports.

Seniors, veterans, people with disabilities, and people living with a disabled relative, may also be eligible for a grant of up to $1,045, unless they reside in the aforementioned regions in which case they can receive up to $845.

In 2025, the program supported nearly 50,000 seniors and more than 19,000 people with disabilities across B.C.

To be eligible for the grants, the property people apply for the tax relief assistance must be the homeowners’ principal residence. People can apply online for the program any time during the tax year, though the province said the best time to apply would be in May after property tax notices have been issued.

The province has set aside $2.075-million for the provincial homeowner grant program in 2026. That was down from the $2.175-million threshold set the year before.
