Recycling truck fire sparks warning about hazardous waste

Jul 24, 2025 | 4:20 PM

A fire in the dump bed of a recycling truck in the Central Okanagan served as a strong reminder that hazardous items do not belong in your curbside bin.

The fire may have started from a metal fuel filter tossed in recycling.

Dangerous items like batteries, fuel filters, propane canisters, and tools with rechargeable batteries can explode or catch fire.

The RDCO reminded the public that hazardous waste should never go in garbage or recycling bins.
