Open house planned for Commonage development proposal

People will be able to learn more about a proposed housing development in Vernon.

Kerkhoff Design-Build has put forward a plan to develop a new neighbourhood consisting of 4,000 new homes, including 1,800 set at attainable prices, at 580 Commonage Road.

To provide Vernon and area residents and business owners with more information about the plan, the developer will hold an open house at the Vernon Recreation Centre Auditorium from 3 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, May 14.

Kerkhoff Develop-Build had previously received approval in principle from Vernon City Council to host public engagement sessions relating to the project, and at last update was in the process of seeking Official Community Plan amendment and rezoning to build the neighbourhood.

In a release relating to the open house, Kerkhoff Develop-Build said the development would be built on a portion of its own property, and that conservation efforts would be made to maintain the current landscape, allow for future development or agricultural use, establish parks and trail networks, and protect and preserve wildlife corridors and sensitive habitats for at-risk species.
