West Kelowna RCMP used a police dog and air services to track down and apprehend a suspected thief.

At approximately 12 p.m. Monday, March 10, Mounties received a report of a suspect vehicle travelling south on Westside Road that was allegedly involved in theft of wire from the Vernon area.

An RCMP helicopter was deployed, which located the suspect vehicle and radioed officers on the ground, who set up a traffic stop.

However, the suspect driver allegedly tried to flee by going into the Rose Valley area.

Air Services continued to monitor the area, eventually locating the suspect vehicle on Olympus Way and observing a male driver exiting the vehicle and trying to flee on foot.

Police Service Dog Mysan was deployed, and was able to track down the suspect and apprehend the suspect, who sustained minor injuries during the arrested.

“This was a very dynamic and well executed multi-jurisdictional arrest with many moving parts,” Sgt. Brendan Dolan of the West Kelowna RCMP, said.

“I commend our frontline officers and special teams who mitigated a significant amount of risk to public safety as a result of this person’s actions.”

The suspect remained in custody pending a court appearance Tuesday, March 11.
