City supports Upper Room Mission’s call for year-round shelter supports
The City of Vernon has backed a call for a year-round shelter.
Vernon City Council received a letter from the Upper Room Mission, asking the city to endorse an application for year-round dry shelter funding from B.C. Housing. It also asked for council’s support in the organization’s requests for capital and construction funding from various levels of government, foundations, private investments, and other sources.
The Upper Room Mission had acquired three adjacent lots on 27th Avenue and was proposing a development of a facility that included a year-round dry shelter; a 15-bed substance withdrawal management unit; sober living accommodations for over 100 people, consisting of studio, one- and two-bedroom units; and space for support services, employment opportunities, and social enterprise.
Council received the request, and voted in favour of writing a letter of support to B.C. Housing at the regular meeting Monday, Jan. 13.
