RDNO grants to help with food waste reduction programs

The Regional District of North Okanagan is supporting projects aimed at reducing waste in the region.

Through the ReTHINK Waste Grant Program, the RDNO will provide grants for Better Table Solutions and FoodMesh in 2025.

Better Table Solutions is a comprehensive program designed to enhance food efficiency and minimize food waste for restaurants through online training and food efficiency audits. Through these means, the program will aim to ensure commercial kitchens have the knowledge and resources needed to reduce waste, optimize food handling practices, and assess environmental impact of their operations when it comes to food efficiency and carbon footprints.

FoodMesh brings together businesses, charities and farmers to redirect surplus food to organizations like food banks, and food that is no longer suitable for consumption to farmers for animal feed.

FoodMesh was developed by the North Okanagan Food Recovery Network in April of 2023 and has already diverted 371,600 kilograms of food from local landfills.
