An investigation by Kelowna RCMP’s Child Exploitation Unit has resulted in the arrest of a man on child exploitation charges.

Mounties said the investigation led to the arrest of 46-year old Patrick Waldrum, who was charged with Possession of Child Pornography and Luring a Child.

Police noted luring charges require evidence that the offender communicated with a person under the age of 18 for exploitation purposes.

Kelowna RCMP said the offences spanned several different countries, and local investigators worked with international law enforcement partners during the investigation, adding the suspect was arrested in Brooks, Alberta.

“In order to combat this borderless online crime, collaborating with several of our international law enforcement partners was key to the success of this investigation,” Sergeant Tim Russell, in charge of the Kelowna RCMP Vulnerable Persons Unit, said.

“The online sexual exploitation of children continues to be an emerging concern in our society and the Kelowna RCMP continues to adapt its investigative strategies to ensure public safety and that offenders are held accountable.”

Waldrum remained in custody pending a court appearance in Kelowna Friday, January 3.
