National Team Qualifier

Racquetball Canada qualifier to be held in Vernon

Jan 2, 2025 | 4:19 PM

Vernon will play host to a tournament featuring the country’s top racquetball players.

The Vernon Racquetball Group will host Team Canada Racquetball’s qualifier tournament, the Winter National Team Selection Event, at Rosters Sports Club.

“Thirty players will be playing at the Rosters to get a place on the Canadian national team for playing racquetball,” Bob Wolf, organizer of the competition, told Vernon Matters.

“If they do [make the cut], they’ll be going to places like Guatamala, anywhere that has a national event. There’s a chance that they’ll be playing at the PanAm Games. It’s really a big deal.”

Male and female players of all ages will play in the tournament, with Wolf saying the top three men and top three women may make the team, though noted there may be other qualifiers in the months to come.

The tournament will be done in an open-division format, meaning anyone can play, with the players with the best scores to be considered for the national team.

“It’s very exciting. These athletes dive for the ball, they jump back up, they go after it. It’s very athletic, it’s wonderful to watch,” Wolf said, adding Racquetball Canada will provide referees, time-keepers, and other officials for the competition.

The organizer did not know exactly who had registered for the tournament, though noted there is a very good male player in Kelowna and Wolf hopes he competes.

Wolf noted Vernon is not a very big racquetball town, but he would like to see local participation grow, saying the Vernon Racquetball Group runs junior and ladies programs.

The tournament will be held at the Rosters on February 7-9, and Wolf encouraged people come out and cheer on the players.

Players who wish to register for the competition can do so at Racquetball Canada’s website.
