A man wanted by local police has been apprehended, thanks to a vigilant member of the public.

At approximately 8:20 a.m. Monday, Dec. 30, a witness spotted a vehicle near Silver Star Road in Vernon and believed the driver to be acting in a suspicious manner.

The witness reported the sighting and a description of the driver to Vernon North Okanagan RCMP, who immediately dispatched police to the area.

Officers set up a coordinated response, but the driver attempted to flee, so a spike belt was used to stop the vehicle.

The suspect attempted to flee on foot but police were able to apprehend him without any further incident.

The suspect, 31 year old Dale Babiy of Vernon, was wanted on outstanding warrants for assault and uttering threats.

He remained in custody Monday pending a future court appearance.

“It is these types of tips that can often assist an already active investigation,” Corporal Tania Finn, Media Relations Officer with the Vernon North Okanagan RCMP, said.

“You never know if you have the missing piece to the puzzle. In this case, the witness did the right thing by observing and reporting.”
