Strong winds caused damage in several areas of Vernon on Wednesday.

The wind gusts that were part of a thunderstorm snapped a number of tree limbs and toppled at least two trees.

One downed tree was in the parking lot at Beach Radio-Vernon Matters on 32nd Avenue.

A coniferous tree blew down just a few minutes after a employee moved his vehicle from the spot as a precaution.

A tree also fell into a house in the East Hill neighbourhood at around 2:25 p.m.

“The two foot diameter fir tree crushed the carport and took down a power line. The windstorm caused the issue. No injuries were reported,” Carolyn Baldridge, Vernon’s Manager of Communications and Grants told Vernon Matters.

Meantime, in the downtown area, a tree limb fell on a residential fence on 34th Street, causing damage, and a car’s window was hit by a large limb while parked near Beairsto School.

The City of Vernon said Vernon Fire Rescue Service was responding to multiple storm/wind related calls.

A large power outage, impacting over 3,600 businesses and residents, took place just before 2 p.m. with the cause under investigation. Power was restored just before 4 p.m.

BC Hydro crews were scrambling to keep up with the incidents
