Students from the Vernon School District will be showcasing their projects at an event this week, hoping they will be worthy of securing scholarships for future learning.

School District 22 is presenting its Scholarship Showcase at the Vernon Recreation Centre May 2 and 3.

“There will be over 80 grade 12 students from across the district who will be presenting projects in competition for scholarships worth $1,250 provided by the Ministry of Education and Childcare. These scholarships are to be used towards tuition at a post-secondary institution,” a District22 news release stated.

Director of Instruction for Learning, Luke Friesen, said the projects provide students a personalized learning opportunity to identify and explore an area of interest and then share their learning and talents with the community.

“Students have been working on these projects alongside a sponsor teacher who offers support and guidance throughout the process. For some students, these projects provide opportunities for them to explore future careers,” Friesen said.

Superintendent Dr. Christine Perkins is thanking the many community volunteers who assist in judging the student projects.

“We appreciate your expertise and the connections you will make with our students through the questions and feedback you provide. This is an excellent opportunity for the students to share their learning in unique ways,” Perkins said.

The showcase is free to attend and takes place on Thursday, May 2 from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. and from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Friday, May 3 at the Recreation Centre.

Projects that require a performance will take place at Clarence Fulton Secondary School on Wednesday May 1 at 6 p.m. The public is invited to attend those performances.
