Petition aims to keep junior hockey team in Armstrong

An online petition had generated close to 1,000 names in support of preventing the North Okanagan Knights junior hockey team from being relocated.

The total was as of Friday morning (March 29), one day after the petition started.

Amanda Watson started the petition on change.org, saying they have been a billet family to the Kootenay International Junior Hockey League team, which is based in Armstrong, for the past six years.

“We have had the privilege of hosting out-of-town players and sharing in their journeys,” Watson wrote. “These experiences have enriched our family life and created bonds that extend beyond the ice rink. Today, however, these cherished moments are under threat as plans to relocate our beloved team to another community are being considered.”

Vernon Matters has reached out to the Knights for comment on the suggestion they are planning to relocate.

Watson goes on to say Armstrong is more than just a location for the team, it’s their home.

“The community has shown unwavering support over the years, cheering on from the stands and celebrating victories together. This move would not only affect us personally but also disrupt a tradition that has been part of Armstrong’s identity for over a decade.”

The Knights play their home games at the Nor-Val Centre, and joined the KIJHL in 2009.

Watson is asking the team to reconsider a possible move.

“The decision to relocate seems to overlook what truly matters – people and community spirit. We believe there is ample local support that justifies keeping the team here in Armstrong.”
