Mar 10, 2024 | 6:30 AM

In what could have been a first round playoff preview, the Trail Smoke Eaters defeated the Vernon Vipers 6-2 Saturday night before 1,368 fans at the Comino Arena.

Montreal native Mathieu Cobetto-Roy led the Smokies with two goals and one assist as they blitzed Vernon with 48 shots on net, giving Ethan David the loss in net.

Hank Cleaves led Vernon with a goal and one helper.

The Vipers have six games left in their regular season and currently are in fourth place in the BCHL’s Interior Conference, while Trail is fifth so they could meet in the opening playoff round.

On Friday night, Owen Kim netted a hat trick including the overtime winner in a 5-4 win over the Merritt Centennials before a crowd of 867 at the Nicola Valley Memorial Arena.

“This was a good, hard win tonight,” Kim told vernonvipers.com. “We had some hiccups in the second period but I was proud of the guys for rallying back.”

The Vipers will host the Alberni Valley Bulldogs Friday March 15 at 7 p.m.
