Late goal pushes Vipers to victory before near-capacity crowd

Julian Facchinelli scored with 44 seconds left in the third period to lift the Vernon Vipers to a thrilling 5-4 win over the Salmon Arm Silverbacks Saturday night at Kal Tire Place.

It was the second goal of the game for the Woodbridge, Ont. product who was named the game’s first star before a large crowd of 2,958 fans in Vernon.

Luke Bibby added three assists for the Vipers who got 27 saves from winning goalie Ethan David.

Cole Cooksey scored two goals for the Silverbacks in the game that saw a scrap between Maddux Martin of Salmon Arm and Viper Nick Mikan early in the third period.

On Friday night, the BCHL co-leading Penticton Vees doubled the Vipers 4-2 before a crowd of 4,308 at the South Okanagan Events Centre.

Isaac Tremblay from Granby Quebec scored both goals for the Snakes.

As of Sunday, Salmon Arm is in third place in the Interior Conference, just one point ahead of the fourth place Vipers who are now 25-15-1-0.

The Vipers host the Cranbrook Bucks for a Family Day matinee on Monday at 2 p.m.
