Splatsin voters have chosen their new band council.

The Enderby-area First Nation held its band election on Monday (Jan. 22) and elected Mike Christian as the new Kukpi7 (chief).

Christian’s 89 votes defeated Nerissa Joseph and George William who both had 76 votes.

“As Splatsin Kukpi7, I will ensure that our nation is united and that all our members receive what they need to thrive,” Christian said on his website. “This includes greater employment and career development opportunities, more reliable infrastructure, and improved health services, education opportunities, and childcare services.”

Christian was Splatsin Kukpi7 once before, from 1999 to 2001.

The five councillor positions were all won by women, including poll-topper Vikki Tronson, followed by Phyllis Jezewsky, Crystal Morris, Miranda Kimbasket and Edna Felix.

The succesful candidates will serve two year terms.

Swearing-in of the new chief and council will take place Tuesday at 5 p.m. at the Splatsin Community Centre.

The elections were held after former Chief Doug Thomas and Councillor Beverly Thomas were removed from council — and banned in running for election for eight years — in September 2023.

That ruling came after a review by the Splatsin Complaints and Appeal Board into complaints of misuse of Splatsin funds.
