Slower year for new home construction in Greater Vernon

Greater Vernon saw the number of new housing starts decline on an annual basis.

The Canadian Mortgage and Housing Corporation (CMHC) reported just nine housing starts in December of 2023, bringing the year to date total to 343.

The starts were down from the 19 in December of 2022, and the annual total was also down from 444 the year prior.

The projects started locally in December included five single family homes and four row houses.

In total, there were 112 single family homes, 84 semi-detached houses, 118 row houses and 29 apartment projects started in Greater Vernon last year.

B.C. and Canada saw different outcomes in December.

CMHC reported 4,954 housing project starts in B.C. and 18,593 across Canada last month. Those were up from the same month of the previous year’s figures of 4,450 and 18,346 starts, respectively.

In all of 2023, there were 47,895 housing starts in B.C. and 223,197 in Canada.

B.C.’s annual total was up from 2022’s figure of 43,104, while the national starts were down from the previous year’s 240,312.
