Community dementia training begins Thursday

Nov 21, 2023 | 10:32 AM

Community groups and service providers will be able to enhance their skills in working with dementia patients.

The City of Vernon, in partnership with the Vernon Seniors Action Network, will host dementia inclusive community training workshops designed for service providers and organizations who work with the public, seniors, community members living with dementia, and their caregivers.

“We expect to see an increasing number of older adults and people living with dementia in our community in the coming years,” Barbara Everdene, long range planner for the City of Vernon, said.

“This training is meant to help participants not only communicate effectively, but also recognize and adapt to the needs of people living with dementia and their caregivers, while ensuring that programs and services offered throughout the community are inclusive of their needs.”

The workshops will be led by dementia advocate, Christine Thelker, and also features members of the Simon Fraser University’s DemSCAPE team.

Three sessions will be held at the Lakers Clubhouse at 7000 Cummins Road. They will go from 1:30 to 3:30 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 23, and from 9 to 11 a.m and 1 to 3:30 p.m. Friday, Nov. 24.

The workshops are free to attend, but participants must register online in advance.

The City of Vernon has been engaging with the community on the development of its Age and Dementia Friendly Community Plan for the past year. It’s expected that the plan will be presented to Vernon City Council in the next few weeks to highlight the specific needs and priorities for policies and programs that support seniors and people living with dementia in Vernon.
