Residents offered free radon test kits

The City of Enderby is encouraging its residents to take action on radon.

Radon is a naturally-occurring radioactive gas that can cause lung cancer. It is inert, colorless and odorless and is in the atmosphere in trace amounts.

As part of the 100 Radon Test Kit Challenge, Enderby and RDNO Area F residents are being offered free test kits which will be available for pick-up at Enderby City Hall at 619 Cliff Avenue from November 3 to November 10, 2023.

The kits must be returned from February 20 to February 23, 2024. It is important that the kits are returned on-time so that the radon readings are accurate when analysed.

The kits collect background radon levels inside of households over a four-month period and are then returned so that levels can be analysed. The kits provide valuable information to local residents about radon levels in their households so that they can make informed decisions on next steps to protect themselves and their families.

A radon information session will be hosted on November 2, 2023. Further information will be provided closer to the session date.

Radon is the leading cause of lung cancer in non-smokers and can be found in elevated concentrations in homes across the country, including the North Okanagan.

Take Action on Radon is a national initiative funded by Health Canada that is led by the Canadian Association of Radon Scientists and Technologists and the Canadian Cancer Society.
