‘Phishing’ phone scam making rounds: RCMP
Police say residents should be very careful if they get a phone call from someone claiming to be from a well-known telecommunications company who is asking for personal information.
“Recently, residents have reported receiving phone calls from someone claiming to be from Telus offering them a sweet deal on phone, internet and TV services,” Const. Chris Terleski from the Vernon North Okanagan RCMP said.
“The catch comes when the scammer tells the victim that in order to receive the offer, they need to provide their social insurance number, driver’s license number, and date of birth.”
Terleski said this is an example of a “phishing” scam which are commonly used to try and trick people into giving out sensitive personal or financial information.
