Vernon Fire Department urges people be careful not to spark a fire

Vernon Fire Rescue is reminding people to be cautious so they don’t start a fire.

The fire department has already responded to multiple grass, wildland and structure fires this summer, and with the ongoing hot and dry weather resulting in an extreme fire hazard risk, people spending their time outdoors are advised to be cautious.

“The risk of wildfire can change quickly, particularly when we are experiencing a steady increase in temperatures like we’ve seen the past few weeks,” Fire Chief David Lind said.

“It’s critical that everyone is aware of their surroundings, careful about the activities they’re doing outside, and if they see smoke or fire, to report it immediately.”

People are reminded to be mindful when discarding cigarettes and when using machinery that could produce sparks or heat such as welders, mowers, chainsaws, grinders, power tools and other equipment.

Those who work with or use the aforementioned items should have fire suppression systems and equipment readily available, and maintain a fire watch after their work is completed.

People using motorized off-road vehicles are also reminded to make sure their vehicles are equipped with spark arrestors.

“We need to work together to keep our community safe from fire hazards all year long, but we must be even more cautious during these hot Okanagan summers,” Lind said.

A campfire ban remains in place in Vernon and the Kamloops Fire Centre, which also prohibits the use of sky lanterns, fireworks, chimineas, torches, and all open burning.

Fires can be reported to the B.C. Wildfire Service by calling 1-800-663-5555 or dialing *5555 on a cell phone.
