Royal Garden Restaurant teasing taste buds

Vernon’s Royal Garden Restaurant believes the time has come to introduce more traditional Chinese dishes to its menu in response to a growing culinary demand for unique items.

“Traditionally most restaurants’ have served the Western Chinese food but every restaurant, in my opinion, has the ability to make the experience you have over in Asia. A lot of those tastes have been adjusted to match  North Americans’ tastes of Chinese food, for example sweet and sour pork, which is not a thing in Asia.” Owner Susie Low said.

Popular Canadian Chinese food often includes these items in the top eight.

  1. Sweet and Sour Chicken: This dish typically consists of deep-fried chicken pieces served with a tangy and slightly sweet sauce made with vinegar, sugar, and ketchup.
  2. Lemon Chicken: Breaded and deep-fried chicken cutlets served with a lemon-flavored sauce. It’s a popular dish known for its tangy and citrusy taste.
  3. Beef and Broccoli: Sliced beef stir-fried with broccoli florets in a savory brown sauce. It’s a simple yet popular dish commonly found in Canadian Chinese restaurants.
  4. Chicken Chow Mein: Stir-fried noodles mixed with vegetables and chicken. The noodles are usually soft and coated in a savory sauce.
  5. Egg Rolls: Crispy, deep-fried rolls filled with a mixture of cabbage, carrots, and sometimes meat. They are a staple appetizer in many Canadian Chinese restaurants.
  6. Sweet and Sour Pork: Similar to sweet and sour chicken, this dish features deep-fried pork pieces served with a sweet and tangy sauce.
  7. Chicken Fried Rice: Fried rice cooked with diced chicken, vegetables, and scrambled eggs. It’s a classic Chinese dish that has been adapted to Canadian tastes.
  8. Cantonese Chow Mein: Crispy egg noodles topped with a variety of stir-fried meats, vegetables, and a flavorful sauce. It’s a popular dish often served at Canadian Chinese banquets.

“Vernon has grown substantially in the last 10 years and with the new people coming into town they bring in especially the bigger metropolitan areas, they are bringing in their knowledge of an ethnic food and they want to relive that experience and that taste that they had when they were living there,” Low added  “ I think Vernon has grown quite diverse in taste and I think Vernon is ready for some more traditional items.”

The Royal Garden’s extensive menu now includes a number of non westernized items.

“We have introduced something called a boawich, so basically it is a steamed bun that is made into a burger and in it is barbecue pork, veggies and a sauce,” Low said. One of the items that has really exploded in the culinary, is people also looking at Summer they’re looking for something a little lighter and that’s where we’ve also introduced a Chinese lettuce wrap.”

The restaurant with a staff of 20,often caters to specific events like birthday celebrations and can accommodate a variety of tastes and specialties.

“People who are looking for specialty dinners, we have no problem making items like longevity noodles, fish maw soup to red bean desserts and all that, we have the skills and know how.

The restaurant has 200 seats inside with an area that can be closed off for private functions, there is also a 25 seat patio. For more information visit Royal Garden online at www.royalgardenvernon.ca  or in person at their Anderson Way restaurant.
