Crank call distressing for Vernon parents

A mysterious phone call during the lunch hour Friday (Mar. 17) caused considerable upset for a Vernon woman and her husband.

The pair don’t wish to share their identity, but told Vernon Matters that they received a call from someone telling them their teenage daughter had been in an accident near the Vernon courthouse.

She immediately hung up the phone, and told her husband.

“I was ready to jump in the car and race down there, but was able to reach my daughter at school and she was okay,” she said. “I called the RCMP and they told me there wasn’t anyone at the detachment by the name the man gave, and that it might have been a scam attempt.”

Police also confirmed there wasn’t an accident of any kind near the courthouse.

The couple had just returned from a funeral of a young family member in Edmonton and the woman is also recovering from a recent motor vehicle accident.

“With everything that has recently happened, this wasn’t a joke, it was very traumatizing,” she added.

Vernon Matters has reached out to RCMP for comment.
