New sidewalk and boulevard use permit coming to downtown Vernon

Feb 14, 2023 | 3:15 PM

Businesses in Vernon’s downtown core will soon be able to expand their retail and patio spaces outdoors.

The City of Vernon is creating a new Outdoor Commercial Use Permit which is expected to become available in early March. Once launched, the new document will replace the existing Sidewalk and Boulevard Area Use Permit.

The new permit will provide the holder with one on-street parking space for business purposes in addition to the sidewalk and boulevard space approved with the previous permit.

Businesses in the Primary and Secondary Business Improvement Areas of downtown Vernon that purchase the permit will be able to bring patios and sales areas outdoors in an area the length of their frontage on the sidewalk or boulevard year-round. The permit will also allow the business to use one on-street parking space for their operations between March 1 and October 31.

The permits will need to be purchased annually.

Vernon city council supported the permit process and fees at the regular meeting Monday, Feb. 13, and bylaw amendments will be brought forward for review and approval at a future meeting.

Businesses will be able to apply for the permits starting in March, with the city planing to release guidelines and application forms in the coming weeks.

This new system was tested as a pilot program between 2020 and 2022 in response to the COVID-19 pandemic and its impact on local businesses.
