Council to decide plans for new features at City Hall

Jan 23, 2023 | 6:00 AM

Vernon council will be discussing the installation of two new features outside City Hall at its meeting today (Jan. 23).

Back on Nov. 28, 2022, council passed a resolution to examine the possibility of installing a memorial plaque outside city hall to honour the three most recent councillors who passed away while in office: Dalvir Nahal, Bob Spiers and Patrick Nicol.

Council also authorized the expenditure of $5,000 to allow for the preparation and creation of the memorial plaque, and approved the quotation for the plaque “What you leave behind is not what is engraved in stone monuments but what is woven into the lives of others – Thucydides.

It was noted council could discuss the proposed quotation at a later date and change the inscription.

A staff report to council said the estimated cost of the plaque, which is made of bronze and is 18″ by 14″ in size, is $3,500. That includes the installation, which is proposed for the stone rock face outside City Hall.

Funding for the plaque is proposed to come from the 2021 Uncommitted Unexpended Reserve which, as of time of publication, had a balance of $82,560.

Council will discuss the report on Jan. 23, and if passed, it’s expected the plaque would be installed no later than Spring 2023.

On another matter, at a meeting Sept. 26, 2022, council passed a resolution to have staff investigate installing a flag pole at the Civic Plaza grounds to be used for special occasions and events.

As part of the 2023 budget deliberations, council approved a change request to install the flag pole at an estimate cost of $10,000. This was to be non-tax funded through the 2021 Uncommitted Unexpected Reserve as well.

The report suggested installing the flag pole next to the sister cities sign, as shown below.

Council will debate that expenditure at its meeting this afternoon.
