RCMP and Fire Rescue seek more resources from Vernon council

The City of Vernon’s special budget meetings have kicked off with the RCMP asking council to consider funding for two additional police officers for next year.

Supt. Shawna Baher told council the two Mounties would cost $414,000, which council will consider as part of its 2023 budget.

“We’re hoping those two additional members can be used on a front-line response,” Baher told Vernon Matters. “We are doing the job, but we can make improvements. Those two additional officers will help us make improvements, especially to front-line policing.”

Baher added more members on the street would mean “getting to calls faster and investigating faster.”

The detachment is currently funded for 56 members in Vernon.

Vernon Fire Rescue is asking council to consider funding for an extra deputy fire chief costing $172,000 to help out with duties like recruiting firefighters and investigations.

Vernon Matters will have more on the first day of budget meetings later today.
