The provincial government is accepting public input for flood preparation planning.

The province stated that, with climate change and extreme weather becoming more frequent in B.C., action must be taken to mitigate potential flooding events.

The Ministry of Forest and Emergency Management B.C. has released an intentions paper focused on specific actions that could be taken, such as improved assessments, preparedness, and response, and needed investments to safeguard communities.

The report has been posted on the B.C. Government’s website, and citizens have until January 6, 2023, to visit the site and provide comments or input.

In the meantime, the province is engaging with First Nations and local governments until December to develop flood mitigation strategies.

Feedback is also being accepted from numerous private sectors including natural resources, agriculture and ranching, construction and home building, engineering and road building, and insurance.

The feedback from the three processes will be used to guide a new British Columbia Flood Strategy, which is expected to be released in 2023.
