A man who spent 30 years in broadcast media and marketing says he aims to create a more transparent local government in Vernon.

Ross Hawse is one of 13 candidates running for the six councillor positions in the City of Vernon.

In a release to Vernon Matters, Hawse stated he wants to “form meaningful government” at the municipal level, adding “it’s more important than ever to form strong progressive leadership with a foundation of transparent communication.”

Hawse said his background in broadcasting allows him to listen to community members’ feedback and forge “strong opinions on the importance of accountable and transparent governance.”

Other key issues outlined by Hawse are community safety and well-being, services for seniors and families, housing and affordability, transportation needs and climate strategies.

Hawse did not expand on what work is needed to address the aforementioned issues, but did state decisions must be made on these matters to benefit Vernon and its citizens.

“I believe it is possible to have our cornerstone be small town values while moving forward building a fruitful city for generations to come,” he added.

Hawse has a degree in communications from the British Columbia Institute of Technology (BCIT). His professional career includes serving as the director of operations for Vista Radio West, general sales manager for Newcap Radio Alberta, and regional manager for Vista Radio’s B.C. South/Vancouver Island group of radio stations.
