Suspects Remain at Large

Counterfeit currency circulating in Salmon Arm

Aug 5, 2022 | 12:42 PM

The RCMP is warning people to check their bills after several incidents involving counterfeit cash in Salmon Arm.

Mounties said there were incidents of fake $100 and $50 bills detected in local business bank deposits.

The RCMP advise banks and businesses to check to see if the bills are phony, and is offering several tips for distinguishing a counterfeit note from real Canadian currency:

  • The clear polymer window on new bills should have the denomination of the bill in the hologram and a holographic picture of the face on the bill;
  • Look at the hologram in the bill’s clear plastic window every time one is used for payment;
  • The phony $50 and $100 bills will have the number five on them and not the correct 50 or 100 denomination number;
  • There may be a slight ridge along the clear plastic window on the bill where it has been spliced together.

Salmon Arm RCMP note the major indicator is the number in the polymer strip, and advises people look for the correct number to match the bill.

Police are searching for the suspects connected in circulating the fake cash.

Mounties attempted to stop a stolen vehicle on Aug. 2, but it took off and was only stopped thanks to the use of a spike belt.

The driver was able to escape capture after the vehicle was disabled, though a number of the suspected counterfeit bills were recovered from the car.

An additional vehicle, described as a black Dodge or Chrysler Neon, also fled from officers and evaded capture. The drivers of both these vehicles remain unidentified and at large.
