Changes made to new Peanut Pool design

The Lakeview Wading Pool in Vernon has been redesigned to ensure it’s sized appropriately to better meet the needs of the users.

The change comes following an additional allocation of $800,000 from the City of Vernon and a $1.8-million federal grant, which brought the total project budget to $3.3 million.

The city’s project team is finalizing a schematic design that reflects feedback from February’s public engagement survey, which is focused on being accessible and sustainable.

The wading pool on 18th Street, known locally as the Peanut Pool, will have a zero depth, beach entry and varying depths of water to meet the needs of the pool users. The pool will be heated with high efficiency boilers to accommodate infant and preschool swim lessons.

The spray park, which will be located between the pool and existing picnic shelter and playground, has been designed so the area can be enjoyed in the early spring or late fall when the spray features are not in operation.

The plan will also see the washrooms and change rooms be universal/single user stalls located in a central breezeway so it can be accessed by both pool and park users.

Demolition of the existing Peanut Pool is planned for late June, though the existing washroom building will remain in place until September to coincide with baseball season. As the new mechanical, storage, washroom building will now be located in a different location, site prep and pool shell construction can proceed with the existing washroom building in place.

The entire project is scheduled to be completed by the end of June 2023.

The new plan will be presented to Vernon City Council at its regular meeting today, May 9, where it’s expected to be received for information.
