Vernon school becomes first to offer seamless childcare program

Feb 17, 2022 | 12:00 PM

Okanagan Landing Elementary will become the first school in the Vernon School District to offer the Seamless Day childcare program.

The initiative, which will start in March, provides before and after-school care for kindergarten students and other school-aged students, as space allows.

“Students connect with familiar educators throughout the day, which allows the educators to support children and expand on their interests, curiosities, and wonders. The team of educators includes two early childhood educators (ECEs) who also work alongside the Kindergarten teachers in the classrooms during the school day,” a School District 22 news release stated.

The licensed childcare facility has space for 12 children with priority being given to children in kindergarten. As space allows, siblings of kindergarten students and children in Grade 1 to 3 will be eligible.

The program will cost $350 per child for before and after-school care; $100 for before- school care only and $250 for after-school care only.

While Landing Elementary is the first school in SD22 to offer the seamless program, Dr. Christine Perkins, superintendent, tells Vernon Matters they have other arrangements for childcare spaces with BGCO, formerly Boys and Girls Clubs of Okanagan.

The province announce last year that the Seamless Day pilot program was being expanded from four schools to 25.

Anyone interested in registering their child for the program is asked to complete a brief survey: https://forms.office.com/r/WhTMJZhNVz
