A long-time supporter of Vernon Winter Carnival has been honoured for her dedication to the event.

Ruth Hoyte has been presented with the Order of Jopo, the highest honour that the Winter Carnival Society can bestow.

“Through the City of Vernon, it has been presented to visiting dignitaries, long time Carnival supporters, past chairmen and honoured cities around the world. All recipients have shown tremendous community spirit and commitment to carnival and the community,” a posting on the society’s Facebook page stated.

The society said Hoyte is a long-time board member and “constant cheerleader” for Carnival and the Greater Vernon community.

“Ruth has been involved with Carnival for over a decade helping grow many events under the Carnival umbrella, namely the Celebration of Talent. She is a voice of reason on the board, helping to build policy and create a sustainable future for Winter Carnival as a society and a festival,” the posting informed.

The society says this will be Hoyte’s final year as a Carnival director, but as she said, she will be a volunteer for life.

“Congratulations Ruth and thankyou for your dedication to VWC,” the society exclaimed.
