‘Tis the season for friends and families to gather, but any celebrating involving drugs and alcohol should include a safe ride home.

RCMP around the North Okanagan will be part of a National Impaired Driving Enforcement Day this Saturday, Dec. 4, the kick-off to the month-long CounterAttack campaign.

“Throughout the month of December, the Vernon North Okanagan RCMP and the BC Highway Patrol Falkland will be teaming up in a joint effort aimed at reducing the number of impaired drivers on our roadways,” said Constable Chris Terleski, media relations officer.

Officers will be conducting enforcement such as check stops, mandatory alcohol screening, field sobriety tests and using drug recognition experts to detect and remove impaired drivers.

Terleski said with changes to the public health order, there will be more opportunities to gather during this holiday season

“Tragically, too many people are injured or killed in preventable alcohol or drug related collisions each year. We want everyone to keep the season festive and fun, and if you are going to drink alcohol or consume cannabis, please arrange in advance for a safe ride home.”

Terleski advised there is zero tolerance for those who choose to take the risk and drive under the influence of drugs or alcohol.

“If you suspect an impaired driver, please call 911,” he said.
