Avalanche control creating difficulties for those heading to Alberta

Dec 1, 2021 | 3:32 PM

Commuters looking to make it over the Alberta border will have to take a long detour.

According to DriveBC, there are avalanche control measures being taken on Highway 1 between Revelstoke and Golden that are creating major delays.

The highway has been closed intermittently Wednesday in Glacier National Park due to the avalanche control work east of Revelstoke between the Illecillewaet brake check and the park’s east boundary.

Travelling beyond Golden is not much easier. The Trans Canada is closed in both directions from Field to the B.C./Alberta border for avalanche control, as is Highway 93 from Radium Hot Springs to the border.

There is no detour for that route, so the only alternatives for people needing to drive to Alberta as of the time of publication, is to go up past Mt. Robson and cross over at Jasper National Park, or head south down through Grand Forks to Crowsnest via Cranbrook.

The avalanche control work in Glacier National Park east of Revelstoke is expected to be complete by 5 p.m. Wednesday, but there is no estimated reopening times for the work past Field or Radium.
