A man allegedly responsible for a robbery and break and enter at two Vernon businesses has been apprehended thanks to quick reactions by a member of the public.

Vernon North Okanagan RCMP received a report of a robbery at a business in the 2700-block of 43rd Ave. Friday night.

The male suspect had entered the store at around 7:15 p.m., allegedly threatened an employee saying he had a weapon, and demanded money.

He fled with an undisclosed amount of cash and store merchandise before officers arrived at the scene.

Shortly after the robbery, the suspect broke in to another nearby business and attempted to steal an all terrain vehicle from inside. However, he crashed the ATV, injuring himself in the process.

A member of the public witnessed the crash and called police. The witness was able to physically control the injured suspect until police arrived and placed the suspect under arrest.

The suspect, a 39-year-old Vernon man who’s name was not released, has been charged with robbery, break and enter, assault, and a number of additional criminal charges. He has been remanded into custody until his next court appearance.
