The Funtastic Sports Society has a new leader who is hopeful they will be able to host a safe and succesful sports and music event next summer.

Jamie Austin is the non-profit group’s new president, taking over for Darcy Sochan who was previously at the helm of the Vernon festival on the July long weekend that has been cancelled for two straight years due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Austin said the board of directors will be looking at ways to host a safe and fun event.

“I am grateful for the opportunity to step in as president this year and are hopeful that we will succeed in hosting a successful event in 2022,” said Austin. “The board and management team will be attending their annual retreat to brainstorm for the upcoming year. Expect to see changes that will be implemented to keep our ball players, music enthusiasts and volunteers all safe while maintaining the spirit of what Funtastic is all about.”

Registration for the slo-pitch tournament is filling up. Teams can register at http://funtasticsports.ca/.

Austin said the live entertainment line up for the A&W Music Festival is being compiled with an announcement of the groups in the spring.

“There will be three entertaining evenings with great line ups each night with tickets being available online.”

Funtastic’s annual general meeting was chaired by Sochan who said despite having no event, the society was able to contribute almost $7,000 back to local organizations from proceeds from a raffle that was held. The meeting at the Vernon Curling Rink was attended by about 29 people.

In addition to Austin becoming board president, also voted in were Ryan McGivern as first vice president and Brad Steel returning as second vice president.

Newcomers Karen Sochan is the new treasurer and John LaPorte takes on the secretary role. Returning to the board are Tim Reardon, Corinne Buller, David Scarlatescu, Pam Condie and Peter Kaz along with newcomer Craig Baker. The board thanked the directors who are not returning this year, for their time and dedications towards the society.

Akbal Mund and Diana Williamson will continue sharing the management positions.
